Flood situation remains grim in Assam

Theflood situation continued to remain grim in Assam on Monday. As per reports,thousands of people have been affected in 6 districts of Assam in the firstwave of flood this year. The affected districts are Dhemaji, Nalbari, Baksa, Barpeta, Jorhat andDibrugarh.

Whilethe Brahmaputra and its tributaries continued to flow above the danger mark inseveral parts of the State, the situation in Nalbari and Baksa is worse andmuch more grave.

Floodwaters of Pagladia river have breached its embankments at two different placesin Tihu under Nalbari district inundating vast tracts of land and villages.Panic has gripped the area where there are about 10 villages with the villagersnot knowing where to go. Some people were taking shelters at governmentschools.

Also incessant rains over the past couple of days in Bhutan have triggered floods in Assam's Baksa district affecting more than 15 villages. Similarly, in Dhemaji district several villages under the revenue circle of Gogamukh have been affected by the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, no local MLAs were seen visiting the flood-affected areas. Flood affected people in Nalbari district have alleged that the Assam government has not provided any relief measures to them.
