GMC yet to shift dumping ground from Deepor Beel

The Guwahati Municipality Corporation (GMC) has failedto shift the waste dumping ground from present location near Deepor Beel toChandrapur area within the deadline. The GMC has failed to follow the directionof the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The NGT in its order had directed the GMC to takesteps to shift the dumping ground from the present site near Deepor Beel inPachim Boragaon to the proposed site in Chandrapur area within June 30.Admitting their failure, an official of GMC said, "We have not yet shifted thedumping ground to Chandrapur area due to some issues."

Meanwhile, the GMC authorities have further informed that they would appeal for an extension of date regarding the matter.

It may be mentioned here that severalenvironmentalists as well as civil bodies have been urging the government toshift the dumping ground from Pachim Boragaon alleging that the garbagedisposed of at Pachim Boragaon has been polluting and intoxicating the water atDeepor Beel, which is one of the recognized wetlands for undertakingconservation measures on the basis of its biological and environmentalimportance.
