Intercity Express derailed at Mariani, elephant killed

The Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express got derailed near Mariani on Wednesday morning. The incident took place when the train crashed against an elephant herd- crossing the railway tracks.

Senior officials of Tinsukia Division rushed to the site immediately along with Relief Train and the section was restored after that. Though no passengers were hurt during the incident, an elephant calf died on the spot.

Meanwhile, the NF Railway has ordered a departmental enquiry to find out details about adherence to protocols. According to Railway officials, "The train was within its stipulated speed.

It should be noted that, there has been a manifold increase in the incidents of elephant crossing during the recent past and NF Railway informed that trains were constantly slowed down whenever any information of herd movement is shared with the railway by the forest department.

"The stranded train left the site at after the coach was re-railed," read an official statement of NF Railway.
