Three hours continuous rains in wee hours of Friday in Assam – Meghalaya border areas in south eastern parts of Guwahati triggered flash flood and landslides at many places in Jorabat area.

Four persons were killed in landslides so far and flash flood in the greater Jorabat areas on Friday wee hours. Heavy showers triggered landslides in the hilly terrain of greater Jorabat and gush of flood water swept away mud and sludge to low lying areas.

A lady was killed in a landslides incident that took place at Sankardev Nagar in the area. The victim was identified as Indira Darjee. Several vehicles, houses in the greater Jorabat area were also damaged in boundary wall collapse and landslides.
A middle aged man was washed away at 13 Mile area in greater Jorabat area by gush of flood water. His body was found later. The victim was identified as Bilad Daimari.

Vehicles plying on NH 37 in Jorabat stretch were stuck in floodwaters. A Jorhat bound night super bus was submerged in flood waters. Police had tough time to rescue passengers from the bus. People in the locality appreciated IC of Jorabat police station Birinchi Das's brave act in rescuing the stranded passengers from the bus. About 9 km stretch of NH 37 from Khanapara to Jorabat areas are under mud and debris due to the rain and landslides in the area.

Locals in the area blamed Meghalaya government's haphazard activities of road constructions and unscientific earth cutting in Jorabat adjacent hilly areas in Meghalaya side. "Assam government should initiate talks with its Meghalaya counterparts for solution of Jorabat flood problem. This type of flood occur in our area is a recent phenomenon", said a local.
