Justice Bobde praises outgoing CJI in Guwahati

Pratidin Bureau

Chief Justice of India-Designate, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde on Sunday praised the outgoing CJI Ranjan Gogoi saying that his greatest contribution has been to civil liberties, and cited his recent verdicts in this regard.

Justice Bobde, who will be sworn-in as the CJI on November 18, said Justice Gogoi was a remarkable judge.

"I am happy to work with him. Gogoi loves Assam a lot. Gogoi said to us that he would settle in Guwahati after retiring." : Bobde said.

Justice Bobde praised CJI Gogoi at a function, held at Pragjyoti ITA Centre, Machkhowa, this evening. Participating the event, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi released the Assamese edition of 'Courts of India: Past to Present'.

Courts of India: Past to Present, published by the Supreme Court in 2016 through the Publication Division of the Govt of India, is a compilation of glimpses into the rich and complex history of the courts and judicial institutions of India, right from ancient times to the modern-day.

The Supreme Court decided to publish translations of the work in the regional languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. The first translation has been made in the Assamese language.

This translation of the book into the Assamese language – and those to follow in other languages – would serve to bring the treasured past of the courts and judicial institutions of India closer to the public and strengthen their faith in the country's legal systems.
