Maha-Vidroh; MDM Workers’ March to Janata Bhawan

Pratidin Bureau

The mid-day meal workers in the state hit the streets of Guwahation Wednesday, opposing the Assam government's move to hand over the cooking anddistribution of the meals to NGOs.

Maha-Vidroh – the protest rally was taken out by All Assam Mid-day Meal Workers Union (AAMMWU) from Khanapara playground.

In August this year, the Centre told Assam government thatit may use the facility of the centralised kitchen for midday meals in urbanareas only.

The workers already get a very meager amount of Rs 1000 as their wage. If the scheme goes to private players, the MDM workers who are employed in the scheme would be rendered jobless.

Earlier, the state government announced its plan to hand over the management of mid-day meal scheme to private players. As per this, the meals would be cooked in a particular centre and then distributed to the schools.
