Massive rail blockade in Sarupathar opposing Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016

Pratidin Bureau

Protests and opposition to implementation of the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 continues in Assam as a number of organisations on Monday blocked railway tracks in Sarupathar.

The 6-hour long rail blockade was led by All Assam Chutia Students Union and joined by other major organisations of the state like All Assam Students Union (AASU), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and others.

The protesters accused the Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP government of Assam and the BJP government at the Centre for forcefully dumping the Citizenship Bill on people of Assam. The organisations also were unhappy that CM Sonowal haven't done enough to protect the interest of the indigenous people of Assam and their slogan of 'Jati, Mati, Bheti', which helped them win the elections in 2016.

Outraged by obstruction from police while protesting, the protesters burned effigies of Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
