The Cabinet of Nagaland has banned the commercial import and sale of dog and dog meat, both cooked and uncooked. The move came after Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO), an apex organization of animal rights groups, urged the Nagaland government to do so, besides putting in place stringent animal welfare laws. Mizoram had taken a similar decision in March.

Chief Secretary of Nagaland, Temjen Toy, tweeted in this regard, "The State Government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets and also the sale of dog meat, both cooked and uncooked. Appreciate the wise decision taken by the State's Cabinet @Manekagandhibjp@Neiphiu_Rio."
