Nagarik Samaj urges ‘Clause 6’ committee to resign

Pratidin Bureau

The members of 'Nagarik Samaj' asked all the members of High Level Committee to resign from it. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has formed the committee on implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord on January 5.

As per notification issued by the Ministry, retired IAS officer MP Bezbarauah will head the nine-member committee. The Committee also consists of Subhash Das (Retired IAS), Dr Nagen Saikia (Former Assam Sahitya Sabha president), Dhiren Bezbaruah, Mukunda Rajbangshi, Ramesh Borpatragohain, Rongbong Terang (Former Assam Sahitya Sabha president), One representative of AASU and a Joint Secretary of MHA.

Notably AASU has made it clear that it would not take part in the committee. The members of 'Nagarik Samaj', including Apurba Baruah, noted journalist Ajit Bhuyan and Prashanta Rajguru, while addressing a press conference on Wednesday said that as AASU has resigned from the committee, the remaining members should also follow the suit and resign from the committee as well. They said that the committee is nothing but a 'cover-up' to the central government's move to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955.

They also thrashed Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said, "Himanta is a liar and he has money power."
