No Panchyat Poll in Assam by Sep 15: SEC

The State Election Commission(SEC) has made it clear that it can not hold election to Panchyats of Assam on September 15 , as directed by Guwahati High Court.

The SEC will soon move an application to the court pointing out to the fact that NRC process has continued and the SEC do not have staff to hold the election.

Earlier the Gauhati High court has set September 15 as the deadline for Panchyat poll considering the fact that June 30 was the initial date of publication of draft NRC. But as it was pushed back to July 31, accordingly the SEC has also sought more time.

The SEC commissioner H N Bora made it clear that along with 2250 panchyats of Assam, election Guwahati Municipal Corporation Dima Hasao Autonomous Council and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council is also due.
