NRC : Only 5 days left ! 28 lakh claims, 800 objections filed

Pratidin Bureau

With just five days remaining till the deadline for filing claims and objections ends on December 31, around 28 lakh applications have been received by the NRC authority, while only 800 objections have been filed.

Whereas on July 30, the final draft showed that around 40 lakh people had been left out. This would indicate that around 70 percent of the people left out have actually filed their claims till now.

Meanwhile, only 800 objections have been filed in NRC updation process till date. It may be mentioned that objections can be filed against the name of any person that had already found its name into the Register, but doubts persist about the person's nationality.

A large number of people, who have settled in Assam coming from different states of India, claimed that their names did not figure in the draft NRC for their documents were not verified in time by the respective states. Authorities had sent as many as 5,72,809 documents to various states and 403 documents to 37 foreign countries for verification.

The Supreme Court on December 12 extended the last date for submitting claims and objections to the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam till December 31.

A bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman extended the deadline — earlier set to expire on December 15 — for filing the fresh claims for inclusion into the draft and submit objections to names already included, following a request from the state government.
