Pratidin Bureau

Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury said that the onions will now come from Egypt. "Onions will be imported from Egypt to Mumbai and from Mumbai, it will come to Assam. The price of the onions will be Rs. 55 per kg till it reached Assam. Now people will consume foreign onion," said Choudhury.

It may be mentioned that onion prices have touched sky-rocket as it isbeing sold at Rs. 100-120 per kg in Assam and the Food and Civil Suppliesdepartment failed to control the price of onion.

Onions are selling at around Rs. 85-90 in Guwahati, as faulty supplymanagement and failed import policy by the state government, make it unlikelythat prices will fall before the first half of December. In other places likeTangla, onions sold at Rs. 100-110 per kg in the last two days.

Earlier, the minister said that Assam is a consumer state of onion andthe prices of onion have been on the rise in the states that produce onionadding that which is why the prices of onion are likely to decrease only afterthe first week of December.
