Over 200 detained in Guwahati

Thepolice on Sunday detained more than two hundred protesters in Guwahati. Theywere taking part in the protest March, which was called by Bhumi AdhikarSangram Samiti (BASS) demanding land patta for the indigenous people of theState.

Thedetainees included senior journalist Adip Phukan, Padma Shri Ajoy Kumar Duttaand several women protesters. The protesters shouted slogans against thegovernment and demanded land patta for the indigenous people in Guwahati.

"Thegovernment had assured us of giving land pattas, but that assuranceremains to be met," said a protester. "The government is playing a dirtypolitics in the issuance of land pattas to the indigenous families inthe State. Before the panchayat poll, the government provided land pattasto a selected few and some of BJP members in Guwahati," alleged anotherprotester.
