On Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) OP Rawat declared that exclusion from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final draft did not mean that people would be barred from casting their votes in the elections.

He stated that people excluded from the final draft of the NRC can vote as long as their names are on the electoral rolls.

He added that the NRC and electoral rolls are very different and the registration of voters in the electoral rolls is decided by the election laws.

Rawat said that people will have to prove to the electoral registration officers that they are citizens of India by using documents to support their claim in order to be part of the voter list.

Explaining further he said that he is a citizen of India working in Delhi and is transferred to Assam where he has been living for the past two years and is in the electoral roll but not in the NRC as he is an Indian citizen.
