Reinstate SPG Security to Gandhi Family: APCC

Pratidin Bureau

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee
(APCC) on Monday staged protest against the withdrawal of Special Protection Group (SPG) cover of the
Gandhi family.

The APCC demands that the Centre
should provide the previous SPG security to the Gandhi family and former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh that was being removed by the Centre on Friday last.

The Centre
has decided that after the highest tier of security in the country is removed
from the Gandhi family, they will get Z-plus security by the Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF).

The decision
was taken after multiple security agencies carried out a threat perception
assessment and found there was no direct threat to them, as per the government sources.

It may be
mentioned here that earlier in August, the government had also removed the SPG
cover given to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and downgraded his security
to the Z-plus category.

The APCC also submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the Governor of Assam Jagdish Mukhi.
