RS Deputy Chairman Brings Tea for Protesting MPs

Pratidin Bureau

The Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh on Tuesday morning brought tea for the eight suspended MPs who were protesting overnight in the Parliament lawns. The Deputy Chairman met the MPs and offered tea to them which they rejected.

In a video posted by news agency ANI, the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman is seen speaking to the MPs and offering them tea after their overnight sit-in against suspension from the House.

"Harivansh ji said he came to meet us as a colleague and not as Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. He also brought some tea and snacks for us. We started this sit-in demonstration yesterday as a protest against our suspension," Congress MP Ripun Bora said while quoted by news agency ANI.

Bora said, "No one from the government has come to enquire about us. Many Opposition leaders came to show solidarity with us. We are going to continue this demonstration."

A protesting Trinamool MP said, "We should welcome the Deputy Chairman anytime anywhere. We did it so. But he should come by himself. Unfortunately, he came with media people to put up a show."

Taking to Twitter, AAP's Sanjay Singh wrote in Hindi, "The deputy chairman came to meet us at the dharna site this morning. We told him that the anti-farmer law was passed without voting even as the BJP was in minority and that he is also responsible for it."

The eight MPs were suspended by Rajya Sabha Chairman on Monday for "unruly behaviour" during the passage of two farm bills, following which the suspended leaders went on an indefinite sit-in inside Parliament complex.

This came after Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected a notice for a no-confidence motion against Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
