Security beefed up before Independence Day celebration in Assam

Security measures have been beefed up ahead of the Independence Day celebration in the state. This was disclosed by Director General of Assam Police , Kuladhar Saikia in Guwahati on Saturday.

The DGP said that he was in constant touch with his Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh counterparts regarding security offensive against militants in bordering areas of both the states.

" We have asked both Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh police to carryout offensive against militants in Assam bordering areas. In some districts of the states, section 144 have been imposed so that vested elements can't create any disturbance in the run up to the Independence Day celebration", said Saikia.

Militants outfits including ULFA ( I) and others who have not joined in peace talks with Government of India had jointly called for Independence Day boycott in the NE region in previous years.

The Assam – Meghalaya and Assam – Arunachal Pradesh bordering areas have witnessed militants' activities in recent past.

Saikia further added that overall situation in Assam remains peaceful in post NRC draft published.
