An indefinite shutdown has imposed in Manipur to protest against the government's failure in appointing tribal language teachers in higher secondary schools across the state.

The shutdown was announced and imposed by a joint committee of tribal students' organisations that include Thadou Students' Association (TSA), Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation and Liangmei Naga Katimai Ruangdi.

The protest had minimal impact in the Imphal valley districts but affected movement of public transport and government vehicles on two principal highways that are Manipur's lifeline. Scattered groups were also seen putting up road blockades at some locations. Communication to and from Moreh was severely hindered.

The TSA accused the Chief Minister to be biased against the tribal people.

The shutdown was, however, condemned by other student organisations such as Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur and Kuki Students' Organisation. They insisted that the issue should be dealt with only by the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur.
