Azam Khan Apologizes For Sexist Remark

Samajwadi Party MPAzam Khan apologized to Rama Devi ON Monday for his sexist remarks inparliament which have evoked outrage.

Rama Devi, the DeputySpeaker of Parliament, who earlier declared that she would never forgive him,today said his remark has "hurt both women and men in India".

"He will not understand this. He hasacquired really bad habits. I have not come here to hear such comments,"she added.

Devi was chairing proceedings when Khan made the remarks duringThursday's debate on the triple talaq bill.

 Azam Khan, who made headlines more than oncewith his offensive sexist comments, had claimed his remarks weremisinterpreted.

"I have been an MLA for nine times, a ministerseveral times, a Rajya Sabha member too. I was a parliamentary Affairs Ministertoo. I know legislative procedures. However, if my words hurt anyone, I herebyapologise," Khan said, however he wasvigorously criticised by colleagues across the board.

Replying to his apology Rama Devi said, "If Azam Khan had apologized for his indecent statement on the same day, I would have forgiven him. He even walked off on Thursday after making this comment – adding insult to injury.".

"I will tell theSpeaker that Azam Khan has not only embarrassed Rama Devi, but women across thecountry have been insulted. I will tell the Speaker Om Birla that Azam Khanneeds to be given such exemplary punishment that is remembered for generationsto come," she also added.
