Cases of the deadly Nipah virus are rapidly being reported in the country with latest news from Kerala where the death toll due to fever from the virus has risen to 10.

Nipah virus infection is a newly emerging disease which can be transmitted to humans from animals. The natural hosts of the virus are bats, pigs and other animals. The mortality rate of the virus is 70% and has no vaccination.

The latest victim of the virus is a 31-year old woman from Kozhikode who is suspected to have died after catching fever due to transfer of the virus.

The deadly virus is also under World Health Organisation's 'Top of The List' priority diseases identified as potentials for the next major outbreak.
