Former Defense Minister George Fernandes no more

One of the most prominent leaders of the socialist movement in the 1970s and Former Defence Minister, George Fernandes breathed his last on Tuesday. He was 88. He had been who suffering from Alzheimer's disease and bedridden over the past few years .

George Fernandes served as Defence Minister between 1998 and 2004.

Mr Fernandes held several ministerial portfolios including communications, industry and railways during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government apart from the defense ministry.

Condoling his death, PM Narendra Modi tweets "George Sahab represented the best of India's political leadership. Frank and fearless, forthright & farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to the country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of poor and marginalised. Saddened by his passing away".

President of India Ram Nath Kovind  expressed his grief and tweeted : Distressed to learn of the passing of Shri George Fernandes, who served India in many capacities, including as Defence Minister. He epitomised simple living and high thinking. And was a champion of democracy, during the Emergency and beyond. We will all miss him

George Fernandes was born in Mangaluru on June 3, 1930 was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha. His term was eventful as it witnessed the Kargil war and Pokhran test.
