Heavy rain alert issued for Mumbai

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued an orange alert for Thane and Pune, Mumbai on Friday. An orange alert is a sign for authorities to prepare for a severe condition.

A red alert was issued for July26 and 28 in Palghar. The alerts intended to indicate stages of rough weatherrange from yellow to orange to red.

As per the weather forecast,heavy to heavy rain in Thane and Raigad, Mumbai on July 26 have been predicted.Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Palghar.

"Due to heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall possibility fromJuly 27, there may be flooding in low-lying areas. Wall collapses in case ofold constructions cannot be ruled out," an IMD official said.

It may be mentioned that Mumbai and Thane may receive heavy rainfall (64.5mm-204.4mm) approximately till July 28.

According to weathermen, there is a cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat and the neighbourhood and a frail offshore trench from North Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast.

The Monsoon got dynamic on Tuesday midnight, with the island city recording the highest rain this season of 173mm.

There is a strong monsoon circulation over central and northeast India with the presence of a dynamic monsoon trench slightly to the south of its normal position," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (meteorology), Regional IMD.
