India-Maldives discuss work visa issues

Pratidin Bureau

Maldives has reportedly denied work visas to hundreds of Indians who were offered work in the island nation.

India has been holding discussion with the concerned authorities over the issue and is hoping that at some time, an economically viable decision will be made on their part.

As per media reports, the visa delays are believed to be politically motivated.

Normally, it takes 15 days for Indians to obtain permits to work in Maldives. However, since February, the number of work visas issued to Indians has been sharply declining.

In the light of political unrest in the nation, India has called upon the Maldivian government to allow transparency in the functioning of democratic institutions.
