Kerala: Air India flight death toll at 18

Another passenger died in the flight crash of Air India Express from Dubai carrying 190 people skidded off a tabletop runway in heavy rain and broke into pieces on Friday evening at Kozhikode airport in Kerala.

The death toll has now risen to 18 on Saturday, an official statement said.

The Boeing 737 overshot the runway at 7.41 PM and slid into a valley, said Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who has ordered an investigation. The AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) , DGCA and Flight Safety department have reached the city to investigate the accident, the statement added.

The pilot-in-command Captain Deepak Sathe and his co- pilot Akhilesh Kumar were among those who were killed in the tragic incident.

Special relief flights have been arranged from Delhi and one from Mumbai for all the passengers and their family members, the statement further added.
