Kerala records first arrest in triple talaq case

TheKerala Police on Friday arrested a man for giving instant triple talaq to hiswife. This is believed to the first such arrest in a triple talaq case in thecountry after the The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill waspassed by Parliament.

Theaccused has been identified as 34-year-old EK Hussam, who was arrested fromKozhikode area. "He was arrested following a warrant issued by a court inThamarassery. Hussam had divorced his wife by pronouncing 'talaq' thrice onAugust 1," a police officer was quoted as saying by IANS.

Punishmentfor breach of the law by the husband could be up to three years ofimprisonment.
