SC/ST Amendment Bill Introduced In Lok Sabha

Pratidin Bureau

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill 2018 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Friday by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.

The Bill seeks to amend the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. If the amendments are passed by the Parliament, it will nullify the Supreme Court judgment pronounced in March 2018.

The Bill had been approved by the Union Cabinet this week after the Centre decided to present a constitution amendment bill in the Parliament to reinstate the original provisions of the SC and ST Act.

The Supreme Court had stated in its order that the immediate arrest of the accused under this SC/ST Act would no longer be compulsory and a preliminary enquiry by the probing agency or the police had to be conducted first.
