Pratidin Bureau

At a time when the upgrading process of NRC is going on, it was unclear as to when the Panchayat elections will be conducted; but the wait has come to an end with orders from the judiciary. Gauhati High Court has issued an order to conduct the elections within September 15.

A bench of the high court headed by AK Goswami has issued this order of conducting Panchayat elections on or before 15th of September by the Assam government and the state election commission.

It may be noted here that by issuing this order, the high court has denied the plea of extending the tenure of Panchayats.

The high court has also asked the state government to constitute committees to administer gaon panchayats, anchalik parishads and zila parishads till the election is held and new elected bodies are constituted.
