Mascots for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games revealed

Pratidin Bureau

The organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics revealed the mascots for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to a cheering crowd on Sunday.

Miraitowa, a deep blue and white checked character with the Olympic rings and Tokyo 2020 written on its head, is the official mascot for the Olympic Games. Miraitowa consists of two Japanese words, Mirai meaning future and Towa meaning eternity.

Meanwhile, Someity, a pink and white checked character will be seen at the Paralympics. Someity is reportedly named after a special cherry blossom variety grown in Japan known as 'Someiyoshino'.

The organisers, operating through Twitter handle @Tokyo2020, revealed the mascots on the micro-blogging website, "It's official! The name of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games mascot is #MIRAITOWA, and #SOMEITY as the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games mascot! Comment down below and Say Hi to our official mascots!"

The organisers had revealed a list of mascots in December last year and asked Japanese schoolchildren from over 16,700 schools to vote for the best mascots.

The Tokyo Olympics will be start on July 24 and last till August 9, while the Paralympic Games will be held from August 25 to September 6.
