According to NASA, "The findings will help scientists understand the history of lunar water — a potential resource for sustaining long term operations on the Moon and human exploration of deep space."

This breakthrough finding was revealed after analyzing the data collected through NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE). To gather information about the Moon's exosphere, LADEE reportedly orbited the moon from October 2013 to April 2014.
