Brunei: Adultery, gay sex to be punished with death by stoning

Pratidin Bureau

Under Brunei's strict Sharia law, adultery and gay sex will be punished with death by stoning from next week, authorities said.

The nation, which practises strict Islam, shocked all its rights groups with the recent inhumane move.

Brunei, the tiny nation on the island of Borneo surrounded by Malaysia and the South China Sea is set to implement the harsh penal code from the forthcoming Wednesday. It may be noted that the country's penal code also prescribes amputation of a hand and foot for theft

Earlier, homosexuality had already been declared illegal in Brunei but now, it will become a capital offence. However, the law only applies to Muslims.

The new penalty for theft is amputation of the right hand for a first offence, and the left foot for a second offence.
