Earthquake Jolts Indonesia

A strong earthquake on Tuesday hit Bali, causing residents to flee their homes and temples and damaging many buildings.

According to the U.S. Geographical Survey, the earthquake of magnitude 5.7 was centred 82.1 km to the southwest of Denpasar on Bali at the depth of 91 km.

The national disaster agency posted photos on its Twitteraccount showing the tremor damaged house and mosque in Banyuwangi in East Java anddamaged Hindu temple in Bali.

As per the report, more than 20 homes, schools, temples and officeswere moderately damaged by the tremor, predominantly in Badung district.

It may be mentioned that Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.
