European Commission (EC) got its first ever female president Ursula von der Leyen following an approval of 383 votes in a secret ballot on Tuesday evening (local time) at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

60 year old Leyen of Germany is set to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker, who served as the EC president since 2014. He will retire on October 31.

The newly elected EC president had been a long time ally of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a member of her centre-right Christian Democratic Union.

Leyen, as an EC president will be required to lead the European Union's executive body and provide political guidance to the Commission.

it may be noted that the commission proposes new laws, manages the EU budget and enforces EU law.

Von der Leyen will assume her position on November 1, one day after Britain's Juncker steps down from the EU.
