"Chandmari Flyover to Open Before Bihu", Says Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the much-anticipated Chandmari flyover in Guwahati will be inaugurated before the upcoming Bohag Bihu celebrations next year. Amidst rapid infrastructure development across the state, Sarma hit out at critics of the government’s flyover projects, stating that those who complain are the ones using them the most.

“In the daytime they protest, and at night they cut trees to stop work, yet construction of the Chandmari flyover is progressing,” the Chief Minister said. “People blame us for traffic jams, but the same people are the ones who cross the flyovers first. We’re determined to finish this work, and we’ll open it before Bohag Bihu.”

Speaking at a public event, Sarma also revealed that the Bharalumukh flyover and the Cycle Factory redevelopment project will be inaugurated in February 2026. “These projects are not just about modern infrastructure, they’re about reconnecting with our heritage,” he added. He informed that the new Supermarket and Downtown projects will be named after ancient Kamrup kings who had fought valiantly to make Assam shine in ancient India. “We are reviving history through modern construction,” he said.

Highlighting the progress of flyover construction across Assam, the Chief Minister said, “We are not limiting our development to Guwahati. Two new flyovers have been initiated in Dibrugarh, and the third one will start soon in Jorhat.” He asserted that once these elevated roads are completed, the perennial problem of traffic congestion will significantly ease. “There will be no more vehicle-related hassles along these routes,” Sarma assured.

Sarma also appealed to the public to remember the condition of the old Bharalumukh Supermarket, saying, “Those who have seen the past will understand the scale of transformation. Even traders will benefit from better parking facilities.”

Looking ahead, the CM confirmed that the long-awaited bridge connecting North Guwahati will be opened in January. Another bridge at Narengi-Kurua is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. "The Ring Road corridor project will also begin soon," Sarma added.

In a major boost to air connectivity, the state’s new airport is scheduled to be inaugurated in November 2025. “Along with the airport, a six-lane access road has been built. Moreover, an elevated corridor from Jalukbari to the airport will be constructed to ensure smooth travel,” the CM said. He added that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has assured full support in building flyovers across all corners of Assam.

“Assamese people want progress, they want development,” Sarma said, pointing out that the Reserve Bank of India had recognised Assam as the third fastest growing state in India last year.

He also reiterated that these achievements were possible within just four years of the BJP-led government’s tenure.
