A potential communal flashpoint is brewing in Guwahati’s transport sector, with a section of cab drivers alleging discrimination based on religion in the implementation of a purported welfare scheme.
A viral call recording has surfaced, reportedly featuring an individual named Hemen Talukdar, who is heard offering exclusive benefits to Hindu cab drivers while sidelining their Muslim counterparts. The scheme allegedly promises financial incentives of up to ₹2 lakh per Hindu driver and even includes an assurance of arranging a personal meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to the recording, Talukdar claims to be acting on behalf of higher authorities and suggests that only Hindu cab drivers would be included in the yet-unofficial scheme. References to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the controversial issue of beef in Dhubri were also made during the conversation, further fueling suspicions of a communal agenda.
The move has sparked deep concern among the city’s diverse community of cab drivers, who now appear divided into religious factions. Legal activist Shesh Shah Nawaz Mohammad and several affected drivers have urged the Chief Minister to take cognisance of the matter and clarify the government's stand.
“If such a scheme truly exists, it should be made public and inclusive of all drivers, irrespective of their religion,” said Nawaz, calling for transparency and communal harmony.
No official statement has yet been issued by the Assam government regarding the alleged scheme or the authenticity of the viral call. However, growing calls from civil society and concerned citizens demand an impartial inquiry into the matter before tensions escalate further.
