Incessant rainfall over the past few days has triggered a sharp rise in the water level of the Dhansiri River, leading to widespread flooding across several areas of Assam's Golaghat district.
The sudden deluge has thrown life out of gear for thousands of residents, inundating homes, farmlands, and vital road links in villages in Khumtai. With drinking water and food supplies running low, the affected people have called upon both the state government and the district administration for urgent relief and rescue assistance.
The river, swelling rapidly with foaming currents, has unleashed destruction in villages such as Butolikhowa, Borbalitup, Xaotoli, and Abarghat, among others. More than ten villages are reportedly submerged, leaving riverside communities helpless and disoriented. In many areas, floodwaters have washed away cattle and submerged hundreds of bighas of farmland, causing extensive agricultural loss.
In Morangi’s Kenduguri area, a crucial embankment protecting a local wetland has broken under the pressure of Dhansiri’s rising waters, flooding several nearby villages. Strong currents have swept across village roads, rendering some areas inaccessible and raising fears of complete disconnection from key routes.
The river’s water level continues to rise at an alarming rate. Villages in the Kenduguri stretch, including Mitham Chapori, Dagaon Abarghat, Duxutimukh, Na Pamua, and Rongajan Grant, are now completely waterlogged. Locals fear worsening conditions as the heavy rain shows no signs of relenting.
In the Barpathar region, the rising Dhansiri has already flooded low-lying areas. In Singimari alone, around 65 families have been affected, forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in temporary camps and makeshift relief centers.
With food shortages setting in and safe drinking water becoming scarce, the situation remains critical. Local residents are pleading for swift and coordinated relief efforts to mitigate the disaster.
