Amid sustained protests by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has finally agreed to hold a crucial meeting with state-appointed experts to discuss safety concerns surrounding the 2000-MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectricity Project at Gerukamukh.
Following continuous agitation by the AJYCP on Saturday, NHPC officials informed the central leadership of the student body that a joint meeting would be convened by July 15, 2025. This meeting will focus on addressing growing concerns over the safety of the mega dam and recent sporadic incidents reported in and around the Gerukamukh area.
According to NHPC representatives, including its General Manager and Public Relations Officer, the primary agenda of the upcoming discussion will be: How safe is the dam?
The public assurance came after AJYCP intensified its protest movement, demanding an immediate halt to the project, which they have long deemed ecologically and seismically hazardous.
Earlier today, in a dramatic show of resistance, hundreds of AJYCP members staged a protest march stretching nearly two kilometres. The rally began from Dirpai in Gerukamukh and concluded near the NHPC project site. Organized by the AJYCP’s central committee, the protest saw a huge participation from youth activists and leaders from across the state.
Earlier this month, reports circulated about the structural damage to the Subansiri Dam Spillway Block S6 during the ongoing monsoon season. In response to this, the NHPC issued a formal clarification stating that no structural damage has occurred to the dam that could pose any safety concerns. The apprehensions raised in certain reports have been termed misleading and not based on facts.
