Even with nearly two months left for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, former BTR Chief and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) Chief Hagrama Mohilary has already set the stage for a high-octane campaign.
Speaking to the media on Friday in Chirang, Mohilary, in his characteristic style, remarked: “The helicopter for my BTC election campaign is already ready, we just need to fill the fuel tank!”
Reiterating his confidence in BPF’s dominance, Mohilary said that his party will secure the highest number of seats in the upcoming BTC polls.
“All political parties will contest the BTC elections, but when it comes to organisational strength, the BPF is far ahead of the Congress, BJP, UPPL, and AIUDF. We are confident that we will secure the highest number of seats in the upcoming polls. They cannot shake us. In 2020, we won 17 seats. This time, we will surpass that. BPF is the number one party in BTC right now. That’s the reality,” he said.
In a sharp jibe at the UPPL, Mohilary said, “The people of BTC will reject the UPPL. While their position may appear stable, they have failed to deliver on development and public service. We governed the BTC for 15 years and ensured consistent progress. In contrast, UPPL already looks exhausted in just five years.”
When asked about the recent controversy involving Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, particularly regarding the ₹50 lakh government-backed dairy farm allegedly registered in his wife's name involving Gir cows, Mohilary chose not to respond.
The event at Bathou Kherai Resort also saw a significant political development, with around 60 individuals formally joining the BPF. The new entrants included a state-level youth leader from the Trinamool Congress and the former president of the BTR Gorkha Students’ Union. Hagrama Mohilary welcomed them with party flags and traditional phulam gamocha, symbolising their induction into the BPF.
