Senior Congress Leader Ripun Bora on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government, alleging that it is conspiring with the Election Commission to manipulate the electoral process in Assam by replicating tactics from Bihar and Maharashtra.
Addressing a press conference, Bora claimed that the BJP came to power earlier on the basis of false promises and is now preparing a blueprint to retain power through voter suppression and electoral manipulation.
“In Bihar, the state government, in coordination with the Election Commission, has already released a special notification. There, the Congress has strongly opposed the large-scale revision process of the electoral roll, which we believe is part of a broader conspiracy to disenfranchise voters,” Bora said.
He went on to allege that in the run-up to the Maharashtra elections, as many as 80 lakh (8 million) fake voter names were added to the electoral rolls. “The BJP is now combining the Bihar and Maharashtra models to prepare what they call the ‘Assam Model’,” Bora asserted.
According to him, this so-called "Assam Model" involves identifying and deleting the names of Congress-supporting voters from the electoral rolls under the pretext of declaring them as "D-Voters" (Doubtful Voters).
“By misusing the Election Commission, they plan to declare numerous people as D-voters and strike off their names from the voter list. This is nothing but a deliberate conspiracy to rob people of their voting rights,” the senior Congress leader alleged.
Bora also claimed that the Congress has already obtained a copy of this blueprint and has brought the matter to public attention to expose what he called the BJP’s "dangerous game plan" ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
He urged people to stay vigilant and resist any attempt to curtail democratic rights, stating, “We will not allow this conspiracy to succeed in Assam. The people must be made aware of these tactics in time.”
