In a vibrant display of cultural pride, a London-based dance group performed Assam’s traditional Bihu dance to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the United Kingdom. The performance was part of a cultural reception organised by the Indian diaspora to celebrate the Prime Minister’s arrival and to showcase India’s rich and diverse heritage on a global platform.

The dancers, originally from Assam and now settled in the UK, expressed immense pride in the opportunity. “I am from Assam and have been living in the UK for the last 12 years. I can’t express how happy I was to see PM Modi. It was a proud moment to perform the Bihu dance,” said Madhusmita Borgohain, a member of the group.

Echoing the sentiment, fellow performer Chinu Kishore, who has lived in the UK for 22 years, shared her excitement: “It was an honour to perform Bihu and see the Prime Minister in person.”

Prime Minister Modi arrived in the UK on Wednesday, marking the first stop of his two-nation tour. During his stay, he will meet with his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, and will also call on King Charles III. This marked his fourth visit to the UK since taking office, following previous visits in 2015, 2018, and to the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021.

The visit was aimed at deepening ties between India and the UK, with a strong focus on boosting cooperation across trade, investment, technology, education, and cultural exchange. The two leaders also discussed plans to finalise a Free Trade Agreement and strengthen economic relations further.

Following his engagements in the UK, the Prime Minister will proceed to the Maldives, continuing his official tour.
