D Gukesh Defeats World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen Again

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh delivered yet another blow to World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen by defeating him in Round 6 of the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Tournament. This marks a significant moment in the tournament and further fuels the growing rivalry between the two chess titans.

The match drew attention even before it began, thanks to Carlsen’s repeated dismissal of Gukesh’s capabilities. The Norwegian grandmaster had earlier described Gukesh as a “weak” player and publicly questioned his skills, particularly in the rapid and blitz formats. Ahead of the game, Carlsen claimed that Gukesh hadn’t proven himself in these formats and was unlikely to pose a serious threat in the tournament.

Despite starting strong in the game, Carlsen’s performance quickly deteriorated as Gukesh seized control of the board. The Indian prodigy capitalised on the opportunity, defeating the reigning World No. 1 in a commanding fashion. The loss adds to Carlsen’s string of disappointing performances in the tournament, where he has managed to secure just one win so far.

After the match, a visibly disheartened Carlsen spoke to Take, admitting to his poor form. “No, I’ve played kind of poorly the whole tournament and this time, I got soundly punished,” he confessed. Reflecting on his state of mind, he added, “Honestly, I’m not enjoying playing chess at all right now. I don’t feel any flow at all when I’m playing. I’m constantly hesitating, and it’s really poor right now.”

The latest victory by Gukesh comes just a month after he stunned Carlsen in a classical format game at the prestigious Norway Chess Tournament. That match ended with Carlsen’s frustration boiling over as he banged the table in reaction to the defeat. However, this time, Carlsen maintained his composure, quietly shaking hands with Gukesh at the end of the game without any visible emotion.

With Carlsen still struggling and Gukesh gaining momentum, all eyes are now on how the rest of the Tournament will unfold.
