Assam CM Announces Names of Recipients for State's Highest Civilian Awards

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the names of the recipients of the state's highest civilian awards for the year 2023.

The civilian awards consist of the Assam Baibhav, Assam Saurav and Assam Gaurav.

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will be conferred the Assam Baibhav Award 2023 in the field of law and justice. Ranjan Gogoi is a former advocate and judge who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He is the first judge from Northeast India to hold the post of Chief Justice of India.

He is currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha, having been nominated by President Ram Nath Kovind on 16 March 2020.

The Assam Government has selected 22 civilians who will be conferred the prestigious award in different fields.

Notably, Assam Civilian Awards are conferred on similar patterns of Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards, the highest Civilian Awards of the Government of India. The number of awards vary every year in each category as per the decision of the Award Committee.

The Government of Assam has extended its heartiest congratulations and gratitude to all the awardees. According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the awards will be conferred on February 10 in the presence of Vice President of India as the Chief Guest.

While addressing media persons today, the Assam CM said, "We will confer the civilian awards of Assam on February 10. The Assam Governor will present at the occasion. The Vice President of India will attend the programme as a Chief Guest."

"The Assam Baibhav Award is the highest state civilian award. In the first year, we gave the Assam Baibhav award to Ratan Tata and last year we gave the award to Tapan Saikia. This time, the Assam government has selected former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi for the Assam Baibhav award," CM Sarma added.
