Fresh controversy has emerged in Assam's Morigaon district as food sacks distributed under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) scheme had advertisements in Bengali. The news comes days after a poster in Assamese was defaced in Barak valley.
The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Morigaon unit has raised their concerns on the matter. They have demanded a ban on the distribution of food grains until the sacks are reprinted in Assamese.
Dipul Kumar Nath, Morigaon AASU unit president said, "This is clearly a conspiracy against our language. Recently, a Bengali based organization were involved in defacing Assamese posters in Silchar and on Friday, we witnessed several sacks containing food grains under the PMGKAY were printed in the Bengali language. We condemn this act. Moreover, we urge the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene in this matter."
The PMGKAY, food security scheme launched in March 2020, is operated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
