Torrential rains in Assam have triggered floods in South Salmara Mankachar district as flood waters submerge several villages affecting hundreds of families.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has triggered water logging in various parts of Guwahati city including the Kahilipara, Jatia, and Hatigaon areas.

A government bulletin on Wednesday stated that Assam’s flood situation continued to improve as the count of the affected population decreased to around 68,000 on Saturday.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) daily flood bulletin said 68,590 people are still reeling under the waters.

Cachar, Dima Hasao, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, and Nagaon continued to remain affected by the floods.

Till Friday, 69,610 people in five districts were affected by the floods. Altogether 705 people were taking shelter in four relief camps, while three relief distribution centres were operational in the flood-hit areas.

Last month, landslides swept away large tracts of land from under railway tracks, resulting in tracks hanging precariously in the air. Two trains got stranded for days in the middle of May in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section. People trapped in the trains had to be airlifted by Indian Air Force.

Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for heavy rains in Assam till 12 June.
